During the Song Dynasty, it gradually evolved into a children's toy. The "Ban Bu Dao" from Qingxu area (present-day Taiyuan, Shanxi) is the earliest existing clay roly-poly toy, featuring a combination structure of a conical base made of red clay and a body made of paper pulp.

Origin and Functional Evolution
Tang Dynasty: The predecessor of the roly-poly was the "Drunken Immortal Catcher" (also called "Encouraging Wine Hu" or "Wine Huzi"), carved from wood with a heavy bottom and light top. It was spun to point to the drinker, serving both as a drinking game and encouragement tool.
Song Dynasty: Gradually transformed from a drinking tool into a children's toy, featuring a craft combining paper pulp and clay sculpture, with shapes evolving into auspicious figures like the Old Longevity Star and chubby dolls.
Qing Dynasty: Craftsmanship further developed, adopting a "hollow inside, weighted bottom" structure to ensure the roly-poly characteristic.
Traditional Craft Representative
Qingxu's "Ban Budao" is made from red clay through six processes including soil selection, clay mixing, and pulp making. Its painting incorporates wood carving techniques. In 2010, it was listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Taiyuan City. The inheritor Han Jianping learned the craft from childhood and introduced new techniques such as cement molds into the traditional process.
Cultural Symbol Evolution
From the Tang to Ming Dynasties, the roly-poly gradually evolved from a Hu ethnic figure to an official figure (wearing a black gauze hat), symbolizing versatility and political acumen; in modern times, new meanings like "Exam Roly-Poly" and "Misfortune Roly-Poly" have emerged.
